Call now — what to do while you wait

Four things that make the next twenty minutes safer

1

Burning smell or smoke

Switch the main breaker off, get everyone out, call 911 if you see flames.

2

Sparking outlet or switch

Turn that circuit's breaker off. Do not touch the device or plug anything in.

3

Water near wiring

Do not step in it. Turn the main off only if you can reach it from a dry spot.

4

Warm, buzzing or humming panel

Leave the cover on. Do not reset breakers that keep tripping.

If there is fire, smoke or someone has been shocked, call 911 first.

What counts as an electrical emergency

A burning or fishy plastic smell with no obvious source
Sparks, scorch marks or melted plastic at an outlet, switch or the panel
A panel that is hot to the touch, buzzing or crackling
Water in contact with outlets, the panel or a junction box
Half the house dark, or lights surging bright and dim
A breaker that trips again the moment it is reset
Any shock from a switch, appliance, tap or fixture

What can usually wait until the morning

One dead outlet with nothing warm or discolored around it
A breaker that tripped once and held after a reset
A light fixture that stopped working
A whole-street outage — that is the utility, not the house

How fast we can get there

Most calls get a same-day walk-through. When it's an emergency, we come out fast and make the fault safe first. Urgent problem after hours? Call anyway — we take urgent calls outside our regular hours.

Emergency questions

Do you come out at night?
Our regular hours run until 9 pm Monday to Thursday and on Sunday, and until 2 pm on Friday. Outside those hours, call anyway if it's urgent — we take urgent calls then too, and we will tell you when we can be there.
Should I turn the power off before you arrive?
If something smells hot, sparks or buzzes, yes: switch off that circuit's breaker, or the main if you cannot tell which. If you cannot reach the panel safely, leave it and stay clear.
Is a tripping breaker an emergency?
A breaker that trips once and holds is a warning. A breaker that trips again as soon as it is reset, or one that feels hot, is not something to keep resetting — call.
How fast can you get here?
Usually the same day. For an emergency we come out as fast as we can — call 503-984-1097, tell us what you see, and we'll tell you when to expect us.
