Would Everyone in Your Portland Home Hear the Alarm?

Signs your home is due for smoke detector installation

Battery-only alarms that do not talk to each other
A detector chirps even with a new battery
No alarm inside one or more bedrooms
No CO alarm on a level with bedrooms
Alarms are yellowed, painted over or of unknown age
A finished basement or attic has no alarm

What Smoke Detector Installation Involves in Portland

Hardwired, interconnected smoke detectors and CO alarms with battery backup — when one sounds, they all sound. A whole house is usually done in a day, across Portland, Milwaukie, Wilsonville, and surrounding communities.

A hardwired smoke detector runs on the house's power, with a battery inside as backup. It is also interconnected: a wire, or a wireless link on some units, ties every alarm together, so when one senses smoke or carbon monoxide, all of them sound. That matters at three in the morning. A battery-only alarm in the basement can sound for a long time before anyone upstairs hears it; with interconnected alarms, the one outside your bedroom sounds too. The battery backup keeps the system working in a power outage, which is when candles and portable generators come out.

Placement follows a simple pattern: an alarm inside each bedroom, one outside each sleeping area, and at least one on every level, basement included. Combined smoke and CO units cover both jobs in one spot, and a CO alarm matters most in a home with a gas furnace, gas range, fireplace or attached garage. In Portland, 38.9% of homes were built before 1940, and many older houses have no alarm circuit at all, so smoke detector installation there means running new wire between the locations, not just screwing new units to the ceiling.

Once every alarm is mounted and connected, each one is triggered in turn until we have heard the whole chain sound. A whole house is usually finished the same day. You get a written estimate before any of it begins, and we pull the electrical permit for you when new wiring goes in.

What Affects the Cost of Hardwired Smoke Alarms in Portland

Swapping alarms on existing wiring and wiring a house that has no alarm circuit at all are very different jobs.

  • Existing wiring or none

Replacing hardwired units on an existing circuit is quick; a house with no alarm circuit needs new wire run.

  • Number of locations

Each bedroom, each sleeping area and every level gets an alarm, so a bigger house needs more.

  • Attic and crawlspace access

The interconnect is routed through the attic or crawlspace, and easy access keeps that quick.

  • Wired or wireless link

Where a wire is hard to route, units with a wireless link can cut down on new wiring.

  • Smoke only or smoke and CO

Combined units, the right pick with gas appliances or an attached garage, are a different model from smoke-only alarms.

  • Old alarms coming down

Yellowed, painted-over or worn-out alarms are replaced rather than reset.

  • Inspection

New wiring gets an electrical permit and an inspection.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Smoke Detector Installation Questions

Are hardwired alarms better than battery ones?
For most homes, yes. Hardwired alarms run on house power with a battery backup and sound together; a battery-only alarm goes silent when its battery dies and sounds on its own. Battery units are a stopgap where wiring can't reach yet.
Can you connect my existing alarms so they all go off together?
Often, yes. If they're already hardwired, we extend the interconnect from the existing circuit. If they're battery-only, we run new wiring between the locations, or use units with a wireless link where a wire is hard to route.
Why does my smoke detector keep chirping?
Usually a low battery. If it still chirps with a fresh battery, the alarm is likely at the end of its service life and should be replaced, not reset. Yellowed or painted-over alarms should go too. We replace them and test the whole chain.
How long does smoke detector installation take for a whole house?
Usually one day, even when new wire has to be run between the locations. You get the plan and a written estimate before we start.
We're selling our house. Can you check the alarms first?
Yes. We check what you have, add what's missing, replace units that are past their service life and test every one. Call 503-984-1097 to book it.
