Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade

September 2026

In downtown Forest Grove, an old panel box had become a safety and fire risk. We replaced it with a new 200-amp panel, installed new breakers and labeled every circuit accurately, so the homeowner knows what each one controls. A whole-home surge protector went in with the panel to guard appliances against power surges, and the job was inspected from start to finish.

“What an amazing electrician! Igor installed a new fuse panel for our house with a whole house surge protector. He was extremely thorough and went the extra mile to ensure our wiring was sound and there were no other issues. I recommend Pwr Pro for all your electrical needs, from the smallest of repairs to the biggest jobs they will take care of you!”

Is Your Forest Grove Home Still on Its Original Wiring?

One home in nine predates 1940, the 1970s are the peak building decade, and 44% of houses went up since 1990 — three kinds of electrical work in one town.

Forest Grove has an older core than most of the towns we serve. 1,030 of its 9,094 homes, 11.3%, were built before 1940, and the city keeps three residential historic districts near downtown and Pacific University: Walker-Naylor, Clark and Painter's Woods; Painter's Woods alone spans houses built from 1880 to 1948. Knob-and-tube and ungrounded outlets are still possible in houses that age. Tualatin Valley Hwy (OR 8) is the road we come in on from Hillsboro.

The busiest building decade was the 1970s: 1,586 homes, 17.4%. Anything wired from 1965 through 1973 may have aluminum branch circuits. Since 1990 about 4,000 more homes have gone up; their wiring is modern, and the work there is about room for new loads like a car charger, a heat pump or a hot tub. Whatever the decade, we don't assume how a house was wired; we look at the panel and a few outlets before we quote. Two things differ from Portland: the power company is the city's own utility, not PGE, and electrical inspections come from Washington County.

Historic-district house? Check for knob-and-tube → Knob-and-Tube Replacement
Wired 1965–73: find out what the circuits are made of → Aluminum Wiring Repair
Newer house, new car: a charger circuit → EV Charger Installation

FAQ — Local Homes

Is the power company PGE here?
No. Most of the city is served by Light & Power, the city's own electric utility, and we check by address. On a service upgrade its engineering staff work out the new installation; we coordinate that for you.
Who inspects the electrical work?
Washington County. The city's Building Division handles structural, plumbing and mechanical work, but electrical permits and inspections go through the Washington County Building Department. We handle that paperwork and book the inspection.
Are there homes with knob-and-tube here?
Some, mostly in the historic districts near downtown, where the oldest houses stand. We look at the panel, in the attic and behind a few outlets before quoting.
Does a 1970s house have aluminum wiring?
Possibly, if it was wired between 1965 and 1973. The build date is only a hint; the wire at the panel is the answer, and we check it before quoting.
Our house went up after 2000. Is there anything to check?
Not much, beyond whatever you want to add. Around 2,730 houses here were built since 2000; the wiring is sound, but the builder's circuits already fill much of the panel. Before a charger, hot tub or shop, we tally free breaker slots and the load, then tell you what fits.
Who owns the local electric utility?
The city does. Light & Power was founded in 1895, is the third-oldest municipal electric utility in Oregon, has bought most of its power from BPA since 1939, and also serves an unincorporated area outside the city.
