EV Charger Installation in Highland, Beaverton

Highland, Beaverton

EV Charger Installation

September 2026

A Highland homeowner in Beaverton wanted a 240-volt plug outside for an electric car. We ran the new circuit from the panel to an outdoor outlet, and while we were in the panel we added a whole-home surge protector to guard the house's electronics. We also walked the homeowner through a few things worth keeping an eye on.

★★★★★Michael C.

“Professional and Informative! Igor installed a E.V. 240V plug outside my home and did a clean and professional install. Compared to other bids I received, Igor's was fair and after he was done it was definitely worth every penny. He pointed out things that I should be aware of and informed me of options to take care of it. He let me know about the importance of surge protector and installed one for me on the fly. I am definitely going to use Pwr Pro Electric for future electrical projects.”

Is Your Beaverton Panel Ready for an EV Charger?

Close to half of the homes here date from 1960–89, when panels were small and, for part of that stretch, aluminum branch circuits were in use.

Beaverton's building boom came in the 1970s and 80s. Between 1960 and 1989 the city added 47.9% of the 42,771 homes it has today, and the 1970s by themselves account for 19.9%, more than any other decade. Pre-1940 houses are scarce, about 936 or 2.2%, so knob-and-tube rarely comes up. A typical subdivision house from those years was wired for lights, a range and a dryer; nobody sizing its panel was picturing a heat pump or a car that plugs in overnight. Sunset Hwy (US 26) and Hwy 217 are the roads we come in on.

Within that stretch, watch anything finished between 1965 and 1973. About 12,800 houses here date from 1960–79, and during those middle years some were run with aluminum branch circuits instead of copper. The date alone proves nothing; a look inside the panel and at a few outlets does, and we do that before quoting. Everything from 1990 on has modern wiring, though plenty of those panels were full before the first charger or heat pump showed up.

Most homes built
1960–89, mostly the 1970s
On a house from these years, the first things we look at are the panel's size and what kind of wire is on the breakers.
Built 1990 or later
Modern wiring, crowded panels
Sound wiring; the usual question is whether the panel has spare breaker space for a charger or heat pump.

FAQ — Local Homes

Does a 1970s house here have aluminum wiring?
Some from the late 1960s and early 70s do. You can spot it as dull silver wire at an outlet or on a breaker; we look before saying either way, and if it's there we explain the repair options.
Should I worry about knob-and-tube?
Here, hardly ever. Houses old enough for it are a small share of the city. In a 1970s house the thing to check is whether the panel can take what you want to add.
Why does my breaker trip when I use the microwave and toaster together?
Usually because they share one kitchen circuit that can't carry both. A 1970s or 80s kitchen was wired for lighter loads; the fix is often a new dedicated circuit. We check the panel for room and pull the permit.
Will my panel handle an EV charger?
It depends on two things: the size of the service coming into the house and how much is already on it. Many 1970s and '80s panels have the room; some don't. A load calculation tells us which before anything is ordered.
Our house was built in the 1980s. What usually needs updating?
More often the panel than the wiring. About 7,700 homes here date from the 1980s, and they were built when nobody planned for a heat pump or a charger. We total up what the house runs today and tell you whether more breaker space will do or the service has to get bigger.
Who checks the electrical work once the job is finished?
The city's Building Division. It handles building, plumbing, heating and cooling, and electrical work for the city, and we book its inspector once the wiring is in.
