Kitchen & Bathroom Remodel Wiring

September 2026

During a bathroom remodel in Orenco, the walls and floor were open, so it was the right time to do the electrical. We put in a new exhaust fan and recessed lights in the ceiling before the finishes went back in. The homeowner has more electrical upgrades planned and plans to have us back for them.

“Igor's work is very precise and completed with excellent results. I will be working with him more in the future for continuing upgrades to my electrical.”

Which Hillsboro Do You Live In?

Most houses here went up after 1990. That usually means solid wiring and a panel with little room left for a car charger, a heat pump or a shop.

There are two Hillsboros. The first is a 1990s and 2000s city: two-thirds of its 43,576 homes were built in 1990 or later, and the 2000s alone are 24.9%, the peak decade. The wiring in those houses is fine. What we get called for is room: a panel the builder filled out in 2004, and an owner who now wants a car charger in the garage, a heat pump, a hot tub on the patio or a subpanel for a shop. Sunset Hwy (US 26) is the road we come in on.

The second one is smaller and older. About 1,270 homes, 2.9%, went up before 1940, mostly around downtown, and some may still hide knob-and-tube or two-prong outlets with no ground. Along Tualatin Valley Hwy sit 5,225 homes from the 1970s; the ones finished between 1965 and 1973 were built while aluminum branch circuits were in use. A build year is a clue, not proof, so we look inside the panel and open a few outlets before we quote.

Newer homes: the question is spare panel space → EV Charger Installation
Pre-1940 houses downtown: check for knob-and-tube → Knob-and-Tube Replacement
1965–73 builds: look for aluminum circuits → Aluminum Wiring Repair

Electrical Facts for Hillsboro Homes

Power company
PGE (Portland General Electric)
A new meter base means PGE has to shut the power off and restore it; we call them and set the date.
Built 1990 or later
Most of the city
For these we start with a breaker count and a load calculation, not a wiring inspection.
Built 1960–89
About one home in four
In a house from these years we open a couple of outlets to see whether the circuits are copper or aluminum.
Built before 1960
Fewer than one in ten
Here we trace which circuits are original and which were added later before anyone talks about a rewire.

FAQ — Local Homes

What does a 2000s house here usually need?
Usually not repairs. A house from that decade has modern wiring; what it runs short on is space and amperage once you add a car charger, heat pump or hot tub. We work out whether the panel can carry it.
Are there homes with knob-and-tube here?
A few, mostly the pre-1940 houses near downtown. You can't tell from the street, so we look in the attic and basement and open a couple of boxes before giving you a number.
Does adding an ADU mean a bigger panel?
Often, yes. A backyard unit has its own heat, cooking and laundry, and a panel in a post-1990 house may not have that much to spare. A load calculation tells us whether a subpanel covers it or the service has to grow, and we pull the permit.
Does a 1970s house near Tualatin Valley Hwy have aluminum wiring?
Possibly. The ones completed between 1965 and 1973 are the houses to check. Silver-colored conductors at an outlet or in the panel settle it; the build year alone doesn't.
Our house went up in the 2010s. Is there anything to check?
Probably not much, unless you're adding something. About 6,800 homes here went up in the 2010s, and their wiring is sound, but the builder usually used most of the breaker slots. Before a charger, hot tub or shop goes in, we count the open spaces and add up the load so you know what fits.
Which power company handles a service upgrade here?
PGE serves the city; it shows up that way on PGE's territory map and on the state's utility boundary map. If the upgrade means pulling the meter, we book the shutoff with them.
