What Security Camera Installation Involves in Portland
Hardwired floodlights, floodlight cameras and motion lights on the house — powered where each camera mounts, on a switch that won't cut it off, across Portland, Tualatin, Sherwood, and surrounding communities.
Most of a security camera installation is electrical work. A floodlight camera replaces an outdoor light and runs on house power, so it needs a sound, weatherproof box on the wall or eave, fastened to the framing, and a feed that stays on. A plug-in camera needs an outlet where it mounts — often under the eave, or in the attic above a soffit — so the cord is short and out of reach. We install the camera or floodlight you choose: you pick the model, and we give it the box, the power and the mount it needs.
A floodlight camera on an ordinary wall switch goes dark, and stops recording, the moment someone flips that switch off. We can wire the camera to an always-on feed and leave the light to the camera's own settings. A motion-sensor floodlight without a camera works the other way: the switch arms it, and it stays dark until something moves. We aim the sensor at the path, not the street, and the heads at the ground, not a neighbor's window.
Where there is no light or outlet near the spot, we run a new line from a nearby circuit to a new box outside. Cameras and LED floodlights draw little power and can usually share a circuit; a detached garage may need its own. New outdoor wiring is new work, and we pull the permit for it. Before we call the security camera installation done, each light comes on, each sensor trips its light, and each camera powers up. For a shop, office or rental building, see commercial electrical services.

What Affects the Cost of Cameras and Floodlights in Portland
The biggest question is whether power is already where the camera or light will go.
Power at the spot
Swapping an existing outdoor light for a floodlight camera is small; a spot with no power needs a new line.
An always-on feed
Rewiring a camera so a wall switch cannot cut its power adds work at the switch or the box.
Height and wall type
An eave two stories up, or a brick or stucco wall, takes longer to mount and seal than first-floor siding.
How many locations
Each camera or light needs its own weatherproof box, fastened to the framing and sealed.
Outlets under the eave
A plug-in camera needs a receptacle near the mount, often reached through the attic above a soffit.
A detached garage
Lights or cameras on a detached garage may need a circuit of their own.
Inspection
New outdoor wiring is inspected, and we pull the permit for it.
