Aluminum Wiring Repair

September 2026

In Beaumont-Wilshire, the old three-wire aluminum circuit feeding the electric dryer was shorting out. We retired it and ran a new 30-amp dryer line with a modern four-prong outlet, routing surface conduit through the garage attic so the walls stayed intact. The work was inspected, and old splices were moved into proper junction boxes to meet code. Aluminum wiring repair like this removes a real fire risk from an older home.

★★★★★Stephen C.

“Igor is amazing to work with. His attention to detail and drive to get the project done to spec (as well as make it look good) are great attributes. He continually went above and beyond to make sure the project was completed to code. I will absolutely work with Igor again when any electrical needs arise.”

Is Your Portland House From the Aluminum Wiring Years?

What to check in a house built 1965 to 1973

House built or added to between 1965 and 1973
Silver-colored conductors in the panel or a box
Cable jacket marked AL or ALUMINUM
Outlet or switch cover plates warm to the touch
Lights flicker or outlets stop working, then come back
Hot plastic smell at an outlet or switch

What the Repair Involves

Warm cover plates, flicker and loose, overheating connections fixed at every box, so no aluminum is left under a screw terminal. We do this work across Portland, Gresham, Tigard, and surrounding communities.

For roughly 1965 to 1973, builders ran aluminum instead of copper for ordinary branch circuits — the lighting and outlet circuits in a house. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper as it warms and cools, so screw terminals on outlets and switches slowly loosen, and the exposed metal oxidizes. A loose, oxidized connection resists current, heats up, and can char the device or the box behind it. The cable in the walls is rarely the problem; the ends are.

Aluminum wiring repair happens at those ends; the trade calls it remediation. At every outlet, switch, fixture and junction box we join a short copper pigtail to the aluminum conductor with a connector listed for aluminum-to-copper use, then land the copper on the device. Where a device stays directly on aluminum, it must be one rated CO/ALR. Every box in the house gets opened, because an untouched connection is the one that fails. We label the panel when we finish so the next electrician knows what was done and where.

Some owners replace the aluminum entirely instead, which is a whole-house rewire. That is the right call when the house also has too few circuits, ungrounded outlets, or a panel due for replacement. The repair keeps the walls closed; a rewire opens them, so the state of your plaster or drywall is part of the decision. A few boxes opened at the first visit show which route the house needs, and the written estimate spells it out.

What Affects the Cost of Aluminum Remediation in Portland

This repair is priced house by house, and these are the things that make one house a bigger job than another.

  • How many connections there are

Every outlet, switch, fixture and junction box gets remade, so the count of terminations drives most of the labor.

  • Heat damage found inside

A charred device or scorched box found along the way is replaced before that connection is remade.

  • Getting into the boxes

Crowded boxes, painted-over cover plates and fixtures on high ceilings all take longer to open and close up.

  • Devices left on aluminum

Where a device lands directly on the aluminum conductor, it has to be a CO/ALR-rated one.

  • Repair or full rewire

Choosing a rewire replaces the cable and opens walls, which is a much larger scope than connector repair.

  • The panel

A panel that is full or due for replacement can add work, or tip the decision toward a rewire.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Aluminum Repair Questions

How do I know if my house has aluminum wiring?
Start with the build date: a house built or added to between 1965 and 1973 is worth checking. Then look for AL or ALUMINUM on the cable jacket in the basement or attic, or dull silver wire ends in the panel. We confirm it by opening a few boxes.
My outlet cover feels warm with nothing plugged in. What does that mean?
Usually a loose connection heating up inside the box, and in a house from those years that often means aluminum under a screw terminal. Stop using it and switch off that circuit. Call 503-984-1097 — we take urgent calls outside our regular hours.
Is aluminum wiring a fire risk?
The wire itself isn't; the connections are. Where aluminum sits under an outlet or switch screw, it can loosen, oxidize and overheat. Warm cover plates, flicker or a hot plastic smell are the warnings. Remaking every termination removes that weak point.
How long does the work take for a whole house?
Usually 2 to 5 days, depending on how many outlets, switches, lights and junction boxes the house has. A full rewire takes longer.
