What Our Customers Say

Professional and Informative! Igor installed a E.V. 240V plug outside my home and did a clean and professional install. Compared to other bids I received, Igor's was fair and after he was done it was definitely worth every penny. He pointed out things that I should be aware of and informed me of options to take care of it. He let me know about the importance of surge protector and installed one for me on the fly. I am definitely going to use Pwr Pro Electric for future electrical projects.

Which Circuits Do You Need When the Power Goes Out?

Signs your Portland home is ready for generator installation

An ice storm took the power out for days
Someone at home relies on powered medical equipment
A freezer full of food has thawed before
The sump pump or well pump stops too
You work from home and outages cost you
The plan is a portable and extension cords

Standby, Portable or Both: What We Install

Backup power wired in safely: a standby unit that starts itself, or an inlet for your portable. We install the brand you choose, across Portland, Wilsonville, West Linn, and surrounding communities.

A standby generator sits outside on a pad, is permanently connected to the house, and starts itself when the power goes out. The part that makes it safe is the automatic transfer switch. When utility power fails, the switch disconnects the house from the PGE or Pacific Power line before it connects the generator, and when the line comes back it switches over and shuts the unit down. Without that break, power would push back out onto the utility line, where a lineworker expects it to be dead. Expect a standby generator installation to take 1 to 2 days.

A portable generator needs the same protection, worked by hand. We mount an inlet on an outside wall and fit a manual transfer switch or a panel interlock — a plate that lets the generator breaker go on only when the main is off. In an outage you plug the portable into the inlet, flip the main off and the generator breaker on, and your chosen circuits run from the panel instead of from extension cords. A cord back-fed into a dryer outlet is never the answer; it puts power on the utility line.

Sizing follows the circuits, not the house. Tell us which loads must stay on — heat, the fridge, a sump pump, medical equipment — and that list sets the unit size and whether the switch covers the whole panel or chosen circuits. On any generator installation the electrical side is ours: wiring, inlet, transfer switch or interlock, and the inspection. A standby unit's gas line is run by a licensed gas fitter from your NW Natural service or a propane tank.

What Affects the Cost of a Generator Hookup in Portland

Standby and portable setups are very different jobs, and your list of must-stay-on circuits shapes both.

  • Standby or portable

A standby unit with an automatic transfer switch is a far bigger job than an inlet and interlock for a portable.

  • Which circuits stay on

Covering the whole panel takes a larger switch and unit than covering a few chosen circuits.

  • Interlock or transfer switch

An interlock plate on the existing panel and a separate manual transfer switch are different amounts of work.

  • Distance to the pad or inlet

The farther the unit or inlet sits from the panel, the more wire and conduit the job takes.

  • Panel condition

A panel with no room, or a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, is sorted out before the switch goes in.

  • The gas line

A standby unit needs a gas line run by a licensed fitter from your gas service or a propane tank.

  • Inspection

The electrical side needs a permit and an inspection, which we handle.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Generator Questions

Our power goes out in winter storms. What are our choices?
Two, mainly: a standby generator that starts itself, or a portable on an inlet with a transfer switch or interlock. Which fits depends on what has to stay on and whether it should start without you.
Natural gas or propane — which is better for a standby generator?
Natural gas is simpler if the house already has a NW Natural line — no tank to refill. Propane suits homes without gas service. Either way a licensed gas fitter runs the line.
How long does a standby generator installation take?
Usually 1 to 2 days. The gas fitter's work is booked first, so the unit has fuel on test day.
Will my panel need work before the generator goes in?
Only if it can't take the switch. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels are replaced, not repaired, so one of those, or a panel with no room, is sorted out first.
