What Our Customers Say

Igor responded promptly to my need to replace two LED ceiling lights at my home. He did the required work quickly and professionally at what I thought was a fair price. I would certainly use him again for electrical work at my home.

If you need electrical work done, call Igor! He came out on short notice to install our security camera and lights, and did a fantastic job. He’s efficient, highly skilled, and very kind. 10/10 recommend for any job, big or small!

Security camera and lights
I’m a little late on this very worthy review, but we were extremely happy with the work Igor did at our home. He installed three electrical heaters and an outdoor light. Igor is thorough and spends extra time to make sure the installation is done correctly and in agreement with the vision of the customer. We will definitely ask Igor to do more work at our house in the future. Thank you Igor. Steven

Is One Ceiling Fixture Doing the Work of a Whole Room?

Signs your Portland home is ready for recessed lighting

One center fixture leaves the room corners dark
Kitchen counters sit in your own shadow
You are finishing a basement or attic ceiling
Table lamps are the only living-room light
Low ceilings leave no room for a hanging fixture
You want dimmers, not a single wall switch

What Recessed Lighting Installation Involves in Portland

Recessed lighting laid out for the room and wired on a dimmer — housings chosen for what sits above the ceiling. We fit them across Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, and surrounding communities.

Recessed lights sit inside the ceiling, so the light comes from a housing above the drywall or plaster rather than from a fixture hanging below it. The housing is the part that matters. Where attic insulation will touch it, the housing must be IC-rated, which means it is built for insulation contact and will not overheat under a blanket of insulation. A non-IC housing needs clear space around it, and in a Portland attic that space rarely stays clear. We choose the housing after we look above the ceiling, not before.

There are two ways in. A new-construction housing fastens to the joists from above and suits an attic, a basement or any ceiling that is open for a remodel. A retrofit housing goes in from below through a cut hole and clips to the drywall, so a finished ceiling stays finished apart from the holes for the lights. Most jobs in an existing Portland house use retrofit housings on the main floor and new-construction housings where the attic gives us access. Layout comes first: we space the lights for the room, keep them off the joists, and put the kitchen ones over the counters rather than the walkway.

LED trims and dimmers have to match. An LED on the wrong dimmer flickers, hums or will not go all the way down, so we pair the trim with a dimmer built for it and test the low end before we leave. Adding recessed lights is new wiring, so we pull the permit and book the city inspection. In a house built before 1940 — 38.9% of Portland dwellings — we check what feeds the ceiling first; if the attic still runs on knob-and-tube, we talk about replacing that circuit before we add to it.

What Affects the Cost of Recessed Lighting in Portland

These lights are priced by the room, and these are the things that make one room more work than another.

  • Number of lights

Each housing means a cut, a connection and a trim, so more lights means more work.

  • What is above the ceiling

An open attic lets us fasten housings to the joists from above; a ceiling under another floor takes retrofit housings.

  • Insulation contact

Where attic insulation will touch the housing, it has to be an IC-rated one.

  • Drywall or plaster

Plaster takes more care to cut cleanly than drywall.

  • Dimmers and zones

A bigger room split into zones on separate dimmers adds switches and wiring.

  • The circuit feeding the ceiling

If it still runs on knob-and-tube, replacing that circuit may come before any lights are added.

  • Inspection

New lights are new wiring, so we pull the permit and book the inspection.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Recessed Lighting Questions

Can you put recessed lights in a finished or plaster ceiling?
Yes. Retrofit housings go in from below through a cut hole, so the ceiling stays finished apart from the lights. Plaster takes more care to cut than drywall, and we check above the ceiling for insulation and old wiring first.
Can my new lights go on a dimmer?
Yes, and we recommend it. We pair the dimmer with the LED trims so the lights don't flicker or hum, and we test the low end before we leave.
How many lights can go on one switch?
It depends on the circuit, the dimmer and the trims, not a fixed count. LED trims draw little, so most rooms run on one switch; bigger rooms often split into zones on separate dimmers.
Do you take small jobs, like a few lights in one room?
Yes. A few lights in one room is a normal job for us, and it gets the same written estimate as a bigger one. Call 503-984-1097 to book it.
