Does One Circuit in Your Portland Home Keep Going Out?
Signs a circuit breaker needs repair or replacement
What Circuit Breaker Repair Involves in Portland
One that keeps tripping, will not reset, or feels hot. The cause found at the panel, then the right part fitted for your panel, across Portland, Hillsboro, Tualatin, and surrounding communities.
A circuit breaker does two jobs: it switches a circuit on and off, and it trips when the circuit draws more current than its wiring can carry. One that trips is usually doing its job. The question is why — an overloaded circuit, a short, a ground fault, a failing appliance, or a device that has worn out and now trips below its rating or will not trip at all. The repair starts with finding out which.
We test at the panel first: the device under load, the connections at the bus and the neutral bar, and the circuit it feeds. A worn or heat-damaged circuit breaker is replaced with one listed for that panel; a part from a different maker does not belong in it, even if it snaps in. If the fault is on the circuit — a bad splice, a damaged cable, an appliance — we tell you that, because a new part would trip just the same. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels are the exception: those are replaced, not repaired, whatever the symptom.
A like-for-like swap is usually a short visit. Changing the size, adding a circuit, or replacing the panel is a bigger job, and we pull the permit for it. We tell you which case you are in before work starts. The power company — PGE or Pacific Power, depending on the address — is not involved: the main is switched off, the work is done, and the house is back on.

What Affects the Cost of Breaker Repair in Portland
Most of the price depends on what our testing turns up at the panel.
Where the fault is
A worn device is a quick swap; a bad splice, damaged cable or failing appliance means work beyond the panel.
A matching part
Every replacement must be listed for that panel, and parts for some older panels are harder to find.
Heat damage at the panel
Scorching at the bus or neutral bar can turn a one-part repair into a bigger fix, or a new panel.
The main breaker
Replacing the main can mean pulling the meter first, which we arrange for you.
Changing size or adding a circuit
Resizing a breaker or splitting an overloaded circuit is more work than a like-for-like swap, and needs a permit.
Panel brand
On a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel, the answer is a new panel rather than a new part.
