What Our Customers Say

Professional and Informative! Igor installed a E.V. 240V plug outside my home and did a clean and professional install. Compared to other bids I received, Igor's was fair and after he was done it was definitely worth every penny. He pointed out things that I should be aware of and informed me of options to take care of it. He let me know about the importance of surge protector and installed one for me on the fly. I am definitely going to use Pwr Pro Electric for future electrical projects.

What 240V Outlet Installation Involves in Portland

A dedicated circuit and the right 240V outlet for an electric dryer, range, induction cooktop or garage tool. Sized to the nameplate and usually done the same day, across Portland, Beaverton, Clackamas, and surrounding communities.

An electric range, an electric dryer and most large shop tools each run on a dedicated 240-volt circuit: one appliance, one two-pole breaker, one receptacle, nothing else on the line. For dryers and ranges, today's standard is four-wire — two hots, a neutral and a separate ground. Houses wired before that rule still have three-wire receptacles, where the neutral doubled as the ground, so a new dryer arrives with a four-prong cord that will not fit. Shop tools use their own plug shapes, and the receptacle is chosen from the tool's nameplate.

The most common kitchen call is the switch from gas to induction. A gas stove needs only a small 120-volt outlet for the igniter and clock; an induction range needs a 240V outlet on its own circuit sized to its nameplate, and in most kitchens that circuit does not exist yet. In Portland houses built 1960 to 1989, and older, the new load also raises the question of panel space and service capacity. We add up the house's loads before we quote, so the answer is honest.

In a garage or shop, the question is distance and how many tools run at once. A single 240V outlet for a welder or compressor can come straight from the main panel; several, plus lights and 120-volt outlets, often make a small subpanel the better plan. Either way the circuit runs from a new two-pole breaker to the receptacle, sized to what the nameplate calls for, and we pull the electrical permit for it.

What Affects the Cost of a 240V Outlet in Portland

A dryer outlet swap and a brand new range circuit are very different jobs, and these are the things that decide which one you have.

  • New circuit or new receptacle

Changing a three-wire receptacle on a sound, correctly sized circuit is far less work than running a new dedicated circuit.

  • The nameplate rating

A larger range or shop tool needs a bigger two-pole breaker and heavier cable, and heavier cable is more material per foot.

  • Distance from the panel

A laundry next to the panel is a short run; a kitchen two floors up or a detached garage is a long one.

  • How the cable gets there

An open basement or attic makes routing easy, while finished walls and ceilings take more time to fish through.

  • Panel space and house load

If there is no room for a two-pole breaker, or the house is already near capacity, that gets solved first.

  • Several tools in one shop

More than one receptacle plus lights often makes a small subpanel the better plan, which changes the scope.

  • Permit and inspection

A new circuit is inspected, so we handle the paperwork and meet the inspector on site.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

240V Outlet Questions

We're switching from a gas range to induction. What does the kitchen need?
A dedicated 240-volt circuit sized to the range's nameplate, run from a two-pole breaker to a four-wire receptacle behind it. A gas range only needed a small outlet, so the circuit is usually new.
My new dryer has a four-prong cord and my outlet has three holes. What now?
Either the cord changes to match the old outlet, or the outlet is replaced with a four-wire one. Four-wire, with its separate ground, is today's standard, and we recommend it wherever the wiring allows. We'll tell you which fits when we look.
How long does a range or dryer circuit take?
Usually one day: breaker, cable and receptacle in, and the appliance tested. If the panel has no room, the written estimate says so before any work starts.
Can a 60-amp service run an electric dryer?
Often, yes. A 60-amp service can still run a number of things, a washer and dryer among them, so we add up what the house already uses before saying yes. The usual minimum today is 100 amps, and if the meter is old we quote a 200-amp upgrade as well.
