Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade in Historic Milwaukie

Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade

October 2026

In Historic Milwaukie, a homeowner called us about a problem that turned out to be the electrical panel itself. We diagnosed it, replaced the full panel and landed every circuit on new breakers, working around the homeowner's schedule. A failing panel is one of the most common finds in Milwaukie's older homes.

★★★★★Paul P.

“Igar was fantastic to work with! Flexible schedule, high quality work, timely and professional ! I couldn’t be happier with the results and would recommend that if you need a reliable electrician he’s your guy! He diagnosed a major issue and full replacement of my panel. High quality happy customer.”

Is Your Milwaukie House Still on Its Original Service?

More than a third of the houses here were built before 1960. Many still have the 60- or 100-amp service they started with, and some are old enough for knob-and-tube.

Of the 15 cities we serve outside Portland, Milwaukie is the oldest suburb. Before 1960 it already had about 3,610 of today's 9,859 homes, with the 1950s alone contributing 18.4%. A 1940s or 50s house here often still runs the 60- or 100-amp service it was built with, along with outlets that have no ground. Go back further and about 1,130 homes, 11.5%, predate 1940; knob-and-tube may still be in those walls. McLoughlin Blvd and Hwy 224 are the roads we come in on.

Then came the 1960s and 70s. Between 1960 and 1989 the city built 47.3% of its housing, with the 1970s the busiest decade at 19.3%, about 1,900 houses. Anything wired between 1965 and 1973 could have aluminum on some of its circuits. Just 16.1% went up in 1990 or later, so nearly every job here begins with a question about what the existing service can carry.

Pre-1940 walls may still hide knob-and-tube → Knob-and-Tube Replacement
1940s–50s houses often on original 60- or 100-amp services → Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade
1970s house? Confirm copper or aluminum → Aluminum Wiring Repair

FAQ — Local Homes

Can an old panel cause an electrical fire?
It can. Worn breakers, scorched connections or more load than the original service was built for can make a panel overheat. An original service in an older house here deserves a look for exactly that reason. If yours is warm, buzzing or smells hot, call us.
Is knob-and-tube likely in my 1930s house?
It's a real possibility in a house that age, even if some circuits were updated later. We look in the attic, at the panel and behind a few outlets before saying either way.
Do ungrounded outlets in a 1950s house mean a rewire?
Not always. The fix runs from grounding and GFCI protection to new circuits; the panel decides how far it goes. We quote it in writing and pull the permit.
Does a 1970s house have aluminum wiring?
Some do, mostly those finished between 1965 and 1973. The only way to know is to look at the wire itself, which we do at the panel and a couple of outlets.
Our 1950s house still has its original service. Is that enough?
Often not, for the way people live now. A 60- or 100-amp service was sized long before heat pumps, induction ranges and car chargers. If you're adding one of those, we total the loads first so you only upgrade as far as you need.
How do I tell whether my address is inside city limits?
The city's own jurisdiction page says city limit lines can be very confusing and points residents to Clackamas County's CMap. Look up your address there, or give it to us and we'll check before we start.
