Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade in Laurelhurst, Portland

Laurelhurst, Portland

Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade

October 2026

The panel in this Laurelhurst home was out of room and showing its age. We put in a new panel and moved every circuit onto new breakers, labelled and laid out neatly. Lots of homes in Laurelhurst are still running on panels from decades ago, so this is one of our most common jobs here.

★★★★★Danyl P.

“I would like to thank the electrician for the excellent work. Everything was done neatly, professionally, and on time. It’s clear that he knows his trade well — he quickly identified the problem and offered a solid solution. He worked cleanly and left everything tidy afterward, which is very important. I would also like to highlight his politeness and punctuality — he arrived on time and clearly explained what he was doing. The pricing was fair, with no unexpected extra charges. I highly recommend him as a reliable specialist you can trust.”

Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade

October 2026

An Eastmoreland homeowner asked us to look over the whole house, and the panel was the biggest problem. We replaced it with a new full-size panel that has room to grow, and finished in one day instead of the two we'd planned. Older Eastmoreland homes often need more circuits than their original panel can hold.

★★★★★Naisa G.

“Igor called me very quickly after I submitted a request. He came over and did a thorough look over my house and was very honest and matter of fact. Even though he has a packed schedule, he was able to get me in. Originally I was told it would be 2 days but he did it all in 1 without it appearing to have been a rush. If I need an electrician again, I’ll definitely be reaching out to him.”

Does Your Portland Home Need a Panel Replacement?

Signs it is time for a panel replacement or a panel upgrade

Breakers trip when two big appliances run together
Lights dim when the dryer or microwave starts
The panel still uses screw-in fuses
It is a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco
No open spaces left for a new circuit
You are adding an EV charger or heat pump

What Panel Replacement Involves in Portland

Panel replacement for worn, full or fuse-era panels, and panel upgrades to 200 amps. The loads added up first, and the power company booked by us, across Portland, Sherwood, Wilsonville, and surrounding communities.

The panel is the metal box where power from the street splits into your home's circuits, with one breaker guarding each circuit. A panel replacement swaps that box and every breaker in it for new ones. When the house also needs more power than its service delivers, the job becomes a panel upgrade: the new panel is larger, and the service feeding it is raised to match — in Portland, most often to 200 amps.

Some panels are replaced whatever their size. A fuse box has no breakers to reset. Inspectors flag two brands, Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco, and we replace those rather than repair them. Others have simply run out of room: every space is full, breakers are doubled up, and there is nowhere to land the circuit for a new kitchen, a heat pump or a charger.

While the panel is open we also look for what a new one has to put right: two wires under one breaker screw, grounding that once ran to a metal water pipe since replaced with plastic, wire too small for the breaker it sits on, and scorch marks at the connections. Each one goes on the written estimate, so you can see what the new panel fixes. Those finds are one reason two estimates on the same street can differ; what moves the price of a panel upgrade walks through the rest.

Your power company has to cut the house off before the old panel can come out. Depending on the address that is PGE or Pacific Power — much of north-east Portland is on Pacific Power, most of the rest of the city on PGE. We pull the permit and book the disconnect and the reconnect with them, so the only call you make is to us. Gresham is all PGE, and we do the same job there: see panel upgrades in Gresham.

Panel Replacement or Panel Upgrade: The Loads Decide

From the hallway the two jobs look the same: a new gray box on the wall. The difference is behind it. A panel replacement keeps the service size you have and renews everything in the box. A panel upgrade raises the service size as well, so the house can carry more at once.

We decide with numbers, not with the age of the box. Heat, water heater, range, dryer, air conditioning and anything you plan to add all go on the list. A 1950s house with gas heat and a gas range may be fine at its current size with a new panel. A house adding a charger, a heat pump and an induction range usually needs the panel upgrade. If a panel replacement at the size you have covers it, that is what we quote.

Is a 60-Amp Service Enough, or Is It Time for a Panel Upgrade?

Not every 60-amp house needs a bigger service. Sixty amps can still carry a fair amount — a subpanel, a charger for the car, the washer and dryer, an air conditioner — as long as they are not all asking for power at once. A hundred amps is usually the floor for a house now, so that is the line we measure a 60-amp panel against.

Two things set the quote. If the old meter base is still on the wall, we price a 200-amp job that replaces it along with the panel. If the house already has 100 amps, the usual panel upgrade takes it to 200. You get the load figures on paper either way, before you decide.

What Happens on Panel Upgrade Day

It starts with a same-day walk-through: we open the panel, add up the loads and give you a written estimate. A panel replacement is a big job, but once you approve it, the work usually starts within a few days, sometimes sooner, on a date we book with the power company.

The work takes one to two days, and the power is off for about 8 hours of it. Keep the fridge and freezer closed, and plan meals, charging and any work from home around that stretch. Before we leave, every circuit is switched on and tested, the new directory is filled in, and we walk you through the panel so you know which breaker does what.

What Affects the Cost of a Panel Replacement in Portland

Two new panels can look alike on the wall and still be very different jobs, and these are the reasons.

  • Service size

Keeping the amps you have is a smaller job than raising the service, most often to 200 amps.

  • The old meter base

If the original meter base is still on the wall, it is replaced along with the panel.

  • How many circuits

Every circuit lands on a new breaker, so a full box with many circuits takes more time and parts.

  • Problems in the old box

Doubled-up wires, wire too small for its breaker and scorched connections are each put right and listed.

  • Grounding

A ground that ran to a metal water pipe since replaced with plastic has to be brought up to date.

  • Where the panel goes

Moving the panel to a new spot, or a long run from the meter, adds wire and labor.

  • Inspection and power company

We pull the permit and book the disconnect and reconnect with your power company.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade

September 2026

An Alameda home in Portland had two panels, one of them an old Murray. We combined them into a single new panel rated for 200 amps, with the main breaker set at 100 amps to match the house's current service. If the homeowners decide to upgrade to 200-amp service later, the panel is already ready for it. We also grounded the house to code and added gas and water bonding.

Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade

September 2026

An older Irvington home lost power, and we were out the next day to find out why. The panel was the problem, so we replaced it and brought the house's electrical up to code at the same time. Electrical panel replacement comes up often in Portland's older homes, where the original equipment was never meant for today's loads.

“Igor has been great! We lost power to our house and he was out to assess the situation the next day! Able to replace our panel and get our older house up to code! Truly appreciate his work!”

Panel Replacement and Panel Upgrade Questions

When does a panel need replacing instead of repairing?
One bad breaker in a sound panel is a repair. A panel that is full, still on fuses, a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, or showing heat or scorch marks needs a panel replacement. We tell you which when we see it.
Will a panel upgrade let me add an EV charger and a heat pump?
That is what the load math answers. We add the charger and the heat pump to what the house already runs. If the total needs more than your service gives, moving to 200 amps is the usual answer; if it fits, a new panel at the size you have may be enough.
Will we have power while the panel replacement is going on?
Not for about 8 hours of it. The job runs one to two days in all, and we give you the date ahead of time, so meals, work calls and charging can be planned around the gap.
Will a new panel add value to my home?
It helps when you sell. Home inspectors open the panel, and buyers ask about fuses and Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels. A current panel with room for new circuits takes that question off the list.
We're remodeling the kitchen. Should the new panel go in first?
First or at the same time. A kitchen remodel usually adds circuits for the range, dishwasher, microwave and counter outlets. With the new panel in place, those circuits land on new breakers with room to spare, and the power only goes off once.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Financing is available — ask when you get your written estimate, and we will go over it before any work begins. We also take credit and debit cards.
