Whole-House Rewire

September 2026

This Eastmoreland home needed much more than one repair. Nearly every electrical system in the house had to be rebuilt, and the job grew as we opened things up. We showed the homeowner each problem we found and explained it, and kept them updated through the whole-house rewire, so nothing about the work was a mystery.

“Igor’s clearly committed to doing the job well from the start, he followed through with determination to that end- even as the job got bigger than expected. My home was in a dire situation before he arrived, in need of a complete and total rebuild and recovery of virtually every system. He made sure to show me what problems I had and explained them to me so I could understand. I appreciated the piece of mind I was afforded by him keeping me in the loop. Before, I was so stressed about the pervasive electrical issues in my home. Now, I’m delighted to be writing this well-deserved review for an excellent tradesman. Thanks for saving my home!!”

Whole-House Rewire

September 2026

A family moving into their dream house in Laurelhurst wanted the electrical brought up to date. The work included new wiring throughout, a replaced electrical panel, added lighting on dimmer switches, extra outlets for low floor lighting at night, and new ceiling fans. They have called us back a few times since to finish the last areas of the home.

“I’ve been working with Igor on projects for over 5 years now and he’s never disappointed. My wife and I bought our dream house a while back. The house needed a lot of upgrades including electrical. I met Igor through a friend and we were very happy after our project. He’s very knowledgeable and does very clean work. Our project included new wiring throughout the house, added lighting with dimmer switches, extra plugs for floor lighting at night, new fans and most importantly, we had our electrical panel replaced. We couldn’t have been happier with how our project turned out! Since then, we’ve called him out a couple of times to do the electrical work of the last few areas of our home. Igor does great work because he only knows how to do great work. I recommend him to all friends who ask me “do you know a good electrician”. Yes, I have a guy for you!”

Does Your Portland Home Need New Wiring?

Signs the wiring itself, not just the panel, is the problem

Two-prong outlets in most rooms
Cloth-covered or rubber-covered wire in the basement or attic
Knob-and-tube or aluminum branch wiring found by an inspector
Breakers or fuses trip on everyday loads
Outlets feel warm, buzz or show scorch marks
Extension cords doing the job of missing circuits

What a Whole-House Rewire Involves in Portland

New wiring from the panel to every outlet, switch and fixture — with walls opened as little as the house allows. We rewire houses across Portland, Oregon City, Troutdale, and surrounding communities.

A whole-house rewire replaces the branch wiring in a home — every cable from the panel to the outlets, switches, lights and hard-wired appliances — with new grounded cable and new devices. Where the old panel is full or undersized, it is replaced at the same time. The wiring you end up with is the same as in a new house.

Portland has a lot of houses that qualify. 38.9% of the city's dwellings were built before 1940, and many of those still carry some of their original wiring behind plaster walls. Others were partly updated in the 1960s or 1970s, so one house can hold three generations of wiring at once. A whole-house rewire makes sense when the problems are spread through the whole house rather than sitting in one room or on one circuit. We start by opening a few boxes, checking what is behind them, and telling you plainly whether the house needs everything replaced or only part of it. A house that was updated room by room over the years is a candidate too, since the newest work is only as safe as the oldest circuit it ties into.

The work runs in phases. We pull the permit, then run new cable through the attic, crawlspace and wall cavities, opening finished surfaces only where the house leaves no other route. The city inspects at rough-in, before walls are closed, and again at final. Old wiring is disconnected and left dead or removed. You get grounded outlets in every room, GFCI and AFCI protection where the code requires it, and a panel with room to grow. Patching of any openings is listed in the estimate, so there are no surprises at the end. For what sets the cost and the schedule, read what moves the price and timeline of a rewire.

What Affects the Cost of Rewiring a House in Portland

This is the biggest wiring job a house can have, and these are the things that set its size.

  • Size of the house

More rooms mean more circuits, more devices and more cable to run.

  • All of it or part of it

Some houses need every circuit replaced, others only the oldest, and opening a few boxes tells us which.

  • Routes through the house

Open attics, crawlspaces and basements let cable in without opening walls; a two-story plaster house has fewer easy paths.

  • Wall openings and patching

Where there is no other route, small openings are made, and any patching is listed in the estimate.

  • The panel

A full or undersized panel is replaced at the same time.

  • Grounds and protection

Every room gets grounded outlets, with GFCI and AFCI protection where the code requires it.

  • Inspections

The city inspects at rough-in and again at final, and we pull the permit.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Whole-House Rewire Questions

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
Look for two-prong outlets in most rooms, cloth-covered wire in the basement or attic, knob-and-tube, warm outlets, or breakers that trip on everyday loads. One of these can be a single circuit; several usually mean the house. We open a few boxes and tell you which.
What happens during a whole-house rewire, step by step?
We walk the house and open a few boxes, then you approve a written estimate. New cable goes in through the attic, crawlspace and walls, the city checks it before walls close, then devices go in and every circuit is tested. Old wiring is disconnected.
Will you wreck my walls or plaster?
No more than we have to. We route new cable through the attic, crawlspace, closets and basement first, and open small access points only where there is no other way in. Any patching is listed in your written estimate before work starts.
How long does a rewire take, and can we stay home?
Usually 1–2 weeks, by the size of the house, and the family can't stay in the house while we work. We give you a start date with your written estimate.
Can we finance a rewire?
Yes. Financing is available — ask about it when you get your written estimate, and we'll go through it with you before any wall is opened.
