Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade in Laurelhurst, Portland

Laurelhurst, Portland

Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade

October 2026

The panel in this Laurelhurst home was out of room and showing its age. We put in a new panel and moved every circuit onto new breakers, labelled and laid out neatly. Lots of homes in Laurelhurst are still running on panels from decades ago, so this is one of our most common jobs here.

★★★★★Danyl P.

“I would like to thank the electrician for the excellent work. Everything was done neatly, professionally, and on time. It’s clear that he knows his trade well — he quickly identified the problem and offered a solid solution. He worked cleanly and left everything tidy afterward, which is very important. I would also like to highlight his politeness and punctuality — he arrived on time and clearly explained what he was doing. The pricing was fair, with no unexpected extra charges. I highly recommend him as a reliable specialist you can trust.”

Whole-House Rewire

September 2026

A family moving into their dream house in Laurelhurst wanted the electrical brought up to date. The work included new wiring throughout, a replaced electrical panel, added lighting on dimmer switches, extra outlets for low floor lighting at night, and new ceiling fans. They have called us back a few times since to finish the last areas of the home.

★★★★★Victor D.

“I’ve been working with Igor on projects for over 5 years now and he’s never disappointed. My wife and I bought our dream house a while back. The house needed a lot of upgrades including electrical. I met Igor through a friend and we were very happy after our project. He’s very knowledgeable and does very clean work. Our project included new wiring throughout the house, added lighting with dimmer switches, extra plugs for floor lighting at night, new fans and most importantly, we had our electrical panel replaced. We couldn’t have been happier with how our project turned out! Since then, we’ve called him out a couple of times to do the electrical work of the last few areas of our home. Igor does great work because he only knows how to do great work. I recommend him to all friends who ask me “do you know a good electrician”. Yes, I have a guy for you!”

Behind the Plaster, Is Your 1923 Laurelhurst House Still 1923?

The neighborhood went up between 1910 and 1929 — knob-and-tube replacement, rewiring and panel upgrades for large two-story Portland homes.

Laurelhurst was built in a single push. Of its 1,816 homes, 494 date from the 1910s and 1,054 from the 1920s — 1,548 homes, 85% of the neighborhood, built between 1910 and 1929. Another 82 followed in the 1930s, 80 in the 1940s and 55 in the 1950s. Only 21 homes have been built since 2000. The typical house runs two stories and covers about 2,123 square feet.

Most of these houses have had the panel changed at least once since they were built. What sits behind the plaster often has not. A house this size was wired for lights and a few outlets, and it now runs a kitchen, a heat pump and often a charger in the driveway. The large lots around Laurelhurst Park raise a second question: how to get power to a garden studio or an ADU without asking too much of the existing service.

FAQ — Local Homes

If we find knob-and-tube, do we have to rewire the whole house at once?
Not always. A rewire can be done in phases — the circuits you use hardest first, or the rooms being opened up during a remodel. Doing it all at once is usually less disruptive, because the walls are opened once.
Our wiring was updated in the 1960s or 1970s. Should we still worry?
Look at what was updated. Often the panel and a few circuits were replaced and the rest left alone, so one house can carry three generations of wiring. Work from 1965 to 1973 may also include aluminum branch wiring. An inspection tells you what is there.
Can my panel take an EV charger, or does it need upgrading first?
It depends on the size of the service and what the house already draws. We add up the loads first. If there is room, the charger goes on a new circuit from the panel you have; if not, the upgrade comes first.
Can you run power to a garden studio on a large lot here?
Yes. A detached studio or ADU usually gets its own feed from the main panel, buried in conduit to the building and ending in a small subpanel there. The first check is whether the existing service has the capacity to carry it.
What does National Register status mean for a Laurelhurst house?
The city's page says the Laurelhurst neighborhood is a National Register District. There, demolition of certain structures requires a land use review called Demolition Review. For electrical work, we check the rules for your specific project before planning it.
