Igor is amazing to work with. His attention to detail and drive to get the project done to spec (as well as make it look good) are great attributes. He continually went above and beyond to make sure the project was completed to code. I will absolutely work with Igor again when any electrical needs arise.

Does Your Sherwood Panel Have Room for What You Want to Add?

The 1990s and 2000s built two in three homes here — modern wiring, but panels sized before EV chargers, heat pumps and hot tubs.

This is a young city. Of its 7,055 homes, 5,542 were built in 1990 or later: 2,710 in the 1990s, the peak decade at 38.4%, and 2,061 in the 2000s. No interstate runs through town; Pacific Hwy (99W) and Tualatin Sherwood Rd are the main roads.

In a 1990s or 2000s house the wiring is rarely the problem. The panel is. It was sized for the loads of its day, and an EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub or a shop subpanel each needs a large dedicated circuit. The older layer is small: 827 homes from the 1970s and a small Old Town core.

Built since 1990? The panel predates EV chargers → EV Charger Installation
Shop or detached garage? A subpanel feeds it → Subpanel Installation
Adding a hot tub? It needs a dedicated circuit → Hot Tub Electrician

FAQ — Local Homes

We lose power in storms. What are our backup options?
Two main ones: a standby generator that starts on its own and runs the circuits you choose through a transfer switch, or a portable generator that plugs into a proper inlet wired to the panel. We check panel room first and help you pick.
Can a 1990s panel take a hot tub and an EV charger?
Sometimes. The 1990s built 2,710 homes here, and those panels were sized for the house as built. Whether both loads fit depends on the service size and free spaces; we do a load calculation first.
Can you run power to a detached shop?
Yes. A shop usually gets a subpanel fed from the house panel, and we pull the permit for it. If the house panel is already full, that is where we start.
Is there any old wiring in town?
Very little: 60 homes predate 1940. The Sherwood houses from the 1970s matter more, because 1965–73 houses fall in the aluminum branch wiring years. A build date alone does not prove aluminum; we look before we quote.
We bought one of the older 1970s houses. What should we check?
Start at the panel. About one in eight homes here dates from the 1970s. Some fall in the 1965–73 aluminum-wiring years, and most were built with smaller services than newer homes. We check the wire type and the panel before you add anything big.
Why does a remodel here involve both the city and the county?
The city handles structural, mechanical and plumbing work, while electrical for projects in town goes through Washington County (503-846-3470). We deal with the county side for you.
