Is There Damaged Wiring in Your Portland Home?

Signs part of a circuit is damaged

Chewed cable or droppings in the attic or crawlspace
Wire splices taped together outside a box
Brittle, cracked or scorched insulation on a cable
A circuit went dead after drilling or nailing
Extension-cord wire used as permanent wiring
Earlier DIY wiring no one can explain

What Electrical Wiring Repair Covers in Portland

Chewed cable, burnt splices, open junctions, a previous owner's handiwork — the damaged section repaired, not the whole house, across Portland, Clackamas, Troutdale, and surrounding communities.

Electrical wiring repair is for damage on part of a circuit that you can see, or that has already been found: cable chewed by mice in an attic or crawlspace, a splice overheated until its insulation turned brittle, wires a previous owner taped together in a joist bay, a cable a drywall screw went through during a remodel. The rest of the house may be fine; the job is the damaged length.

We switch off the circuit, follow it from the panel, and find every damaged spot, not just the first. Damaged runs are replaced box to box with new cable. Any splice goes in a covered junction box that stays reachable, never buried in a wall — open splices from earlier amateur work included. Where a cable was cut behind a finished wall, we open the wall at the damage, not across the room, then test the circuit under load.

Wondering whether a previous owner's wiring was ever permitted? Look the address up on PortlandMaps: the permit history lists electrical permits back for decades. A finished basement, an attic bedroom or an added bathroom with no electrical permit on record is where we start looking for taped splices and cable run without protection.

Rats and mice are the most common reason we replace a short length of cable in Portland. Roof rats travel along attic framing and Norway rats live in crawlspaces, and both chew insulation off live wire. Multnomah County Vector Control answers rat questions and can advise on sealing entry points. Seal the house first, or the new cable is chewed next.

Repair a Splice or Replace the Run?

Splice in a Box

Best for
One damaged spot, with sound cable on both sides
What's done
Cable cut back to good copper, joined in a covered junction box
Where it goes
Somewhere it stays reachable: attic, basement, or a cover plate on the wall

Replace the Run

Best for
Several chewed or brittle spots, or a cable too short to splice
What's done
New cable from one box to the next, old length taken out or abandoned
Where it goes
Attic or crawlspace routes first, so fewer walls are opened

What Affects the Cost of Wiring Repair in Portland

The job is the damaged length, so the price follows how much damage there is and how hard it is to reach.

  • How many damaged spots

Mice rarely chew in just one place, and every damaged length on the circuit is replaced, not only the first.

  • Where the damage sits

Cable in an open attic or basement is easier to reach than a run behind finished drywall or plaster.

  • Length between boxes

Damaged runs are replaced box to box, so a long run between boxes takes more new cable.

  • Earlier amateur work

Open splices, taped joints and undersized wire found on the circuit are each moved into covered, reachable boxes.

  • Crawlspace and attic conditions

Tight crawlspaces and low attics slow the work compared with a full-height basement.

  • Patch or rewire

If the damage turns up room after room, or the circuit is knob-and-tube, a rewire becomes the better fix.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Wiring Repair Questions

Mice chewed the wiring in our attic. What happens now?
Keep that circuit off if you know which it is. We follow the chewed cable end to end, replace every damaged length and test it. Deal with the mice too, or the new cable is next.
We hit a wire while drilling. Can it be fixed?
Yes. Switch that breaker off and leave it off. We open the wall at the spot and replace the damaged run, or splice it in a junction box that stays reachable. Tape and a closed wall is not a repair.
Can you fix a previous owner's wiring without redoing the house?
Often, yes. Cable that is the right size, protected and spliced in a box can stay; open splices, undersized wire and exposed cable get fixed. If most of the house is like that, we tell you a rewire makes more sense.
How long does electrical wiring repair take?
Most repairs to one damaged length are finished the same visit. Replacing a longer run behind a finished wall can take a day, plus patching time for the wall.
Can a junction box be closed up inside the wall?
No. Oregon's electrical code requires every junction box to stay reachable without opening the wall. Splices we make go in a box behind a cover plate, or in the attic, basement or crawlspace where you can get to them.
How do we keep from hitting wires again during our remodel?
Where cable runs through a stud close to the edge, a steel nail plate goes over it so a drywall screw can't reach the wire. We add them anywhere we replace cable in an open wall.
