What Our Customers Say

Professional and Informative! Igor installed a E.V. 240V plug outside my home and did a clean and professional install. Compared to other bids I received, Igor's was fair and after he was done it was definitely worth every penny. He pointed out things that I should be aware of and informed me of options to take care of it. He let me know about the importance of surge protector and installed one for me on the fly. I am definitely going to use Pwr Pro Electric for future electrical projects.

How Much of Your Portland Home Now Has a Circuit Board?

A heat pump, EV charger or induction range arrived
Power strips are the only protection you have
Lights blink when power returns after an outage
A storm has taken out a router or TV
The furnace control board has failed once already
Every appliance in the kitchen has a touchscreen

What Whole-Home Surge Protection Involves in Portland

Type 2 surge protection mounted at the panel, so every circuit in the house is covered — not just the ones behind a power strip. Installed across Portland, Gresham, Lake Oswego, and surrounding communities.

A whole-home surge protector is a type 2 surge protective device that mounts at the electrical panel, on the line side of the circuits it protects. When a surge comes in — from the utility line, from a nearby lightning strike, or from a big motor in your own house cycling off — the device shunts the excess to ground before it reaches the branch circuits. It sits in or beside the panel on its own breaker, and it works whether the surge arrives on the power line or is generated inside the house.

The reason to care has changed. A house built in 1975 had a few electronics to lose; a house today has a circuit board in the heat pump, the EV charger, the induction range, the water heater, the washer, the furnace and the garage door. Those boards are the expensive part of each appliance and the first part a surge takes out. Panel-level surge protection is the layer that covers all of them at once, including the hardwired ones that no power strip can reach.

It is designed to be layered. The panel device takes the big hits; point-of-use strips at the desk, the TV and the home office take the small ones that get past it. One without the other leaves a gap. The install is a short one at the panel: we fit the device, land it on a breaker, keep the leads short so it works as intended, and pull the permit.

What Affects the Cost of Surge Protection in Portland

This is usually a short job at the panel, and these are the few things that can make it longer.

  • Room for its breaker

The device lands on its own breaker, so a full panel needs space made first.

  • In or beside the panel

Some devices fit inside the panel and others mount beside it, which changes the install.

  • Panel condition

A Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco is replaced first, and the device goes on the new panel.

  • Point-of-use strips

Strips at the desk, TV and home office are a separate layer on top of the panel device.

  • Other panel work

Fitting it while the panel is already open for another job saves a separate visit.

  • Inspection

Panel work is inspected, and we pull the permit for it.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Surge Protection Questions

Is a whole-house surge protector worth it?
For most homes today, yes. The heat pump, furnace, EV charger and induction range all run on circuit boards a surge can take out. One device at the panel covers all of them, including hardwired appliances no power strip can reach.
Does it replace my power strips?
No, it works with them. The panel device takes the big surges from the line or from inside the house; point-of-use strips at the TV and desk catch the smaller ones that get past it. Keep both.
Can it go on my existing panel?
Usually, yes, if the panel has room for its breaker and is in good shape. If it's a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco, we'll tell you — that panel should be replaced first, and the device goes on the new one.
Can a faulty electrical panel affect my appliances?
It can. A loose connection, a worn main breaker or a lost neutral can send uneven voltage to your circuits, which is hard on motors and electronics. If lights flicker and appliances act up at the same time, call 503-984-1097 and we'll check the panel.
