Electrical Panel Replacement & Upgrade

October 2026

A homeowner in Vancouver's Lincoln neighborhood called us after hours with an electrical emergency. We came out that evening, stayed late to make things safe, then came back on a holiday weekend to replace the whole panel. Emergency calls like this get a safe fix first and the permanent repair as soon as we can.

★★★★★Beau J.

“Igor really helped me out in an emergency situation. He came by after hours to diagnose the issue. Stayed late to patch things together and make them safe. Then worked me in his schedule on a holiday weekend to replace the whole panel. I am very grateful for his quick response and VERY impressed with the quality of his work.”

Has Your Vancouver Panel Run Out of Room?

New panels and 200-amp services for homes on Clark Public Utilities, with the meter pull and reset scheduled with CPU by us.

What is different here is the order of events. Once you approve the written estimate, we book Clark Public Utilities, and the work usually starts within a few days, sometimes sooner. CPU pulls the meter, and the house is without power for the working part of the job while the old panel comes out and the new panel and service equipment go in. The work takes 1–2 days in all. Only after the inspection passes does CPU come back to set the meter and restore power, so the last step sits on the utility's calendar, not ours. We book each of those visits and tell you the dates as they are confirmed.

Not every house needs the full panel upgrade. If the service is big enough and the panel itself is worn or full, a panel replacement on the same service can be the whole job. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels are replaced, never repaired. If you are adding a heat pump, an EV charger or a shop, the load calculation usually points to 200 amps. A panel upgrade carries no rebate anywhere in Washington in 2026; if anyone tells you otherwise, ask to see it in writing.

Housing here peaks in the 1990s, with a 1970s layer close behind (13,705 houses from that decade alone) and 7,306 homes from the 1940s and 1950s. Each generation got a panel sized for the loads of its day, and the 1965–73 slice can also carry aluminum branch wiring.

When a Vancouver Panel Upgrade Makes Sense

Main trips when the heat pump and dryer run
Tandem breakers already fill every slot
The panel is a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco
Scorch marks or buzzing at the panel
100 amps feeding an EV charger and heat pump

What Affects the Cost of a Panel Upgrade in Vancouver

A panel job here depends on the utility's schedule as much as on what is in the box, and these are the pieces.

  • Replacement or upgrade

A new panel on the same service is less work than raising the service, most often to 200 amps.

  • An old meter

If the meter equipment is old, we quote the 200-amp upgrade rather than work around it.

  • Circuits to move

Each circuit is landed on a new breaker and labeled, so a crowded panel takes longer.

  • Age of the house

Panels in the city's 1940s, 1950s and 1970s houses were sized for their day and can hide undersized or doubled wires.

  • Aluminum branch circuits

A 1965–73 house may need listed connectors where aluminum circuits land in the new panel.

  • Clark Public Utilities visits

CPU pulls the meter before the swap and sets it after the inspection, and we book both visits.

  • Who inspects

Inside city limits the city's electrical department inspects; outside them it is Washington L&I, and the address decides, not the mailing city.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Questions Homeowners Ask

Will the power be off during a panel upgrade?
Yes. Clark Public Utilities pulls the meter before the old panel comes out and does not set it again until the inspection has passed, so the house is dark from the pull to the reset.
Our 1950s house still has 60-amp service. Can we keep it?
For a while, maybe. A 60-amp service can still run a subpanel, an EV charger, a washer and dryer or AC in some houses, but 100 amps is usually the minimum today. If the meter is old, we quote the 200-amp upgrade instead.
How long does the panel work take, from yes to power back on?
The work usually starts within a few days of your approval, sometimes sooner, and takes 1–2 days on site. The last step belongs to CPU: the meter goes back only after the inspection passes.
Can the panel work be financed?
Yes — ask about financing when you get your written estimate. Credit and debit cards are fine too.
