EV Charger Installation

September 2026

A Gresham business in Rockwood asked us for two things: a dedicated outlet for their generator and a charging station for their Tesla. We handled the EV charger installation and the generator outlet, kept the work clean, and finished on the timeline we gave them. The car now charges at its wall connector, and the generator has its own place to plug in when the power goes out.

★★★★★Guitar Sales & Service

“I had Pwr Pro install an outlet for our generator and charging station for our Tesla. They were super professional, met and exceeded our expectations with the price, quality of work, and timeliness. They are at the top of our list when it comes to electrical repair and service. Thank you!”

Can Your Gresham Panel Take a Level 2 Charger?

A dedicated 240-volt circuit for a Level 2 charger, sized against what the house already runs, then tested with a first charge.

The first question is not where the charger hangs but whether the house can feed it. A Level 2 charger adds a large, steady load for hours at a stretch. So before any cable is run we do a load calculation, adding up the heating, water heater, cooking, laundry and cooling the house already draws, and see whether the panel and service have headroom left. If they do, the job is one new circuit. If the panel is out of spaces, a second panel may solve it; if the service itself is too small, the panel is upgraded first, and the estimate says which.

The charger can be hardwired or plug into a NEMA 14-50 receptacle on its own 240-volt run. Hardwired suits an outside wall or a carport. A plug-in unit can leave with you when you move, but that receptacle must carry the charger's rating and whatever protection today's code sets for its location. Either way, EV charger installation is new wiring, and Gresham's own inspectors, not Portland's, check the finished circuit. PGE only comes into it when the service has to grow; for a single new circuit the meter is not touched.

How the Charger Circuit Goes In

What the house draws now, plus the charger

2

Written estimate

Circuit, route and charger location agreed first

3

City permit

4

Run the circuit

5

Inspect and charge

City signs off, then a test charge

Gresham homes peaked in the 1970s at 24.8%, and 53% date from 1960–89, with panels sized for what homes ran then. The 36.1% built since 1990 often got panels sized before home EV charging.

When a Level 2 Charger Starts to Make Sense

Mornings start with a battery that is not full
A second electric car is on the way
No 240-volt outlet in the garage or carport
Every breaker space in the panel is taken
A heat pump or hot tub is also planned

What Affects the Cost of an EV Charger in Gresham

Each charger gets a circuit of its own, and these are the things that make that circuit a quick job or a longer one.

  • Distance from the panel

A charger on a garage wall beside the panel is a short run; a carport or detached garage takes far more wire.

  • How the cable gets there

Through a crawlspace, in conduit on the outside wall, or in a trench: each takes different materials and hours.

  • Plug-in or hardwired

A 14-50 receptacle must be rated for the charger's steady draw; a hardwired unit skips the receptacle altogether.

  • Charger size

A bigger charger means a larger breaker and heavier cable, and the panel must have room to supply it.

  • Panel headroom

Many local panels were sized in the 1960s to 1980s, so the load calculation may call for a panel upgrade first.

  • PGE and the city

One new circuit leaves the meter alone; PGE comes in only if the service grows, and the city inspects every circuit.

  • A second car coming

If another electric car is on the way, we can plan for two chargers now, on two circuits or sharing one.

Every job gets a written estimate before any work starts.

Questions Homeowners Ask

What should I send you for an EV charger estimate?
Photos of your main panel with the door open, its label, and the spot where the car parks, plus the charger model if you have one. They let us plan the circuit route before we come out to your home. Call 503-984-1097 to start.
Will EV charger installation mean a panel upgrade?
Only if the load calculation says so. A panel with no spaces may need only a second panel; a service that is too small gets a panel upgrade first, with PGE disconnecting and reconnecting for that part.
Should my EV charger installation be hardwired or plug-in?
Hardwired suits an outside wall or carport and has no receptacle to wear out. A plug-in on a 14-50 receptacle can go with you when you move. Either choice needs the same dedicated circuit.
How long does EV charger installation take?
The charger and its circuit usually go in the same day. If the load calculation says the panel has to be upgraded first, that part is its own 1–2 day job.
